Mt. Agassiz - April 22nd 2023

Not too much to say about this one other than we wanted to get out for a hike and it seemed easy enough. Sams friends Cheryl, Craig and Elisa were coming over for a games night later that day so we had to be back by 4pm so we left at 8am and started hiking by 9am.

Start of the trail

The trail is well trodden and quite easy to follow with only a bit of deadfall that hasn’t been cleaned up. The first kilometer or so follows a reservoir trail and then turns in to an old powerline trail that has been taken over by water and was nearly a little creek. Once you get to the powerline it turns in to a proper trail through the forest until the end of the Harrison grind trail at a viewpoint. At this point we had lunch and a bit of a break, there was still some snow up here. Its hard to remember what time it was at this point because I’m writing this so much later but it was already getting close to turnaround time.

I wanted to bag the peak proper which involved a short trail to connect to the logging roads at the top, some flat logging road walking and a final bushwack to the shit summit but we crunched the numbers and realized we wouldn’t make it back in time so we changed our plans and decided to go to something called “Ultimate Viewpoint” and turn around which would be shorter. I admit I was a little upset but I don’t have anyone but myself to blame and know that I just need to learn to leave earlier.

The trail to the logging roads was fun and there was a section of boulders that was a bit hard for Jebby to navigate but we made it easily. On the way we found a hiking pole someone had left and picked it up and shortly after we came across a woman heading towards us who just happened to ask about it and so I gave it to her. Once on the logging road we plugged on down to the ultimate viewpoint which had a pretty nice view looking north towards Chehalis but really wasn’t that much better than the viewpoint we stopped at for lunch.

Heading down we retraced our steps and it was uneventful. Little annoyed to not bag the peaks but oh well, c’est la vie.
