MacDonald Peak and Mt. Webb Wednesday August 24th
24km, 2000m EG, 9h15m C2C
I've seen a lot of TR's for these two and I decided to do them yesterday myself. Very good time and I would highly recommend.
Started at 7:15 am. The first part up to Radium Lake is typical CRV approach. The major difference from other trails I found was that the grade was very mild and there wasn't too many switchbacks which actually made it quite pleasant and very quick. There are two overgrown bushy sections I got my pants soaked on the way up though (I had put on the wrong pants in the dark that AM)
After the lake its another 45 minutes or so to the saddle between Webb and MacDonald with the last 15-20 being in the alpine and really starting to get nice views and a great setting. I decided to do MacDonald first and made my way following the GPX track I had. I kind of went off course a bit and ended up going low when I should've stayed high but it was totally fine, it just added a bit of distance and elevation to my stats. I picked my way up the huge boulders to the top. Any time I felt like the next move was even a bit sketchy I was easily able to find a different way with a bit of searching.
Once at the top I found the correct way down and followed the trail back to the saddle which saved me a lot of time compared to the way up. Funny how you can always find the trail on the way down but its harder on the way up....
From
back at the saddle it was 35 minutes to the top of Webb. Compared to
MacDonald, Webb was much more straightforward and just a plod. The top
was kind of sandy and slabby though which I didn't really enjoy. Made it
back down for 4:30.
