Vancouver Island - May 13th-15th 2022
I headed to Vancouver Island this past weekend to visit my friend Braeden and
have our last D&D session. I took the 6pm ferry after work and arrived around
7:30. Braeden picked me up and we went to his place shortly before heading out
to the local climbing gym. First we tried to go to Crag-X but they were closed
because of a competition they were setting up and so we ended up going to
Boulder House, a bouldering only gym. We had a blast for the next 2 hours and I
did a ton of problems, topping it off with a big V6 double dyno move that was a
lot of fun. After we had some drinks and chatted and passed out. We woke up at 9
and hit the road at 10. Our plan was to do some outdoor sport climbing at Mt.
Wells, which I had found online. Braeden and Sheena had never been outdoors
before so I was showing them the ropes (literally). We got there around 11 and a
guy in the parking lot was kind enough to show us the guidebook and let us take
pictures so we could figure out the routes. I identified an easy wall (Prisoner
Wall) that had some 5.7's/5.8's and we went there. I lead the 5.8 and it turned
out to be anything but easy because it was soaking wet. It was nasty wet dirty
ugly climbing but I made it up and after Braeden and Sheena followed, I cleaned
it and we decided to go to a different wall where we were hoping it was dry. We
went to the South Wall and we were in luck, it was much better. We had a blast
on two routes that we didn't know what they were (ended up being a 5.8 and 5.7)
and Braeden actually lead one (his first)!. He waited at the top and I went up
and showed him how to rappel (which was another first for him). We headed back
to his place to get ready for our D&D session at 5.
Joe and Wade came over and we started kind of late at 6:30 but it was a blast.
We nerded it up until midnight when we finally wrapped up our 2 year campaign
(which I won't go in to detail here) before some drunken shenanigans occurred
and I passed out around 2. The next day was lazy and hungover and I took the 1pm
ferry back, drove home and chilled the rest of the day. Good times.
