Time Killer Corona Crag - April 23rd 2022
Woke up late on Saturday AM at 10 after spending Friday evening at a party for Sams graduation and decided to take advantage of the weather by hitting up a new crag that we hadn't been to on Sumas mountain called Time Killer Corona. It was developed last Spring, so its very new, and I had read it was very beginner friendly.
We got ready and left to pick up Coen at 11:30 and drove up to the top of Sumas Mountain. From there we parked and walked down the decommissioned road to the junction of Time Killer (MTB track) from which we followed for ~5 minutes and found the top of the crag.
Setting up our T/R (its a T/R only crag) on the easiest section only took a minute and we went down to begin. Coen still hadn't found his climbing shoes so he was stuck with sneakers but it was a 5.7 so we all made it up quickly. I followed at the end and taught Coen how to rappel using an ATC and a prussik while I had him backed up with a Munter.
Next we moved the top rope over to where we thought the two 5.10b's were there. However when Sam hopped on and then eventually me we both thought it was harder than 5.10b. I eventually got it but it took me quite a few tries and the beta is basically non-existent so I'm convinced it was a new route but I'm not sure we will ever know.
After that Coen decided to do his first lead climb on an easy 5.6 ledge climb that was specifically designed for first time leaders (said so in the beta). He made it up easily and I messed up by pulling the rope without cleaning the draws. I was faced with the difficult decision of either going up and back down with a bunch of rope management in between or free soloing the 5.6 to grab the draws. I opted to do the latter and even though it was super easy and short, what a thrill!
We ended the day with setting up on another anchor to do a few more 5.10bs. These were a lot closer to that grade and I figured we were on the right ones for once. Great day!!!
