Mt. Amadis via International Ridge - June 10th 2022
My work was closed this past Friday due to some hydro work so I decided to make the most of it and go for a big hike. I had originally got all excited I was going to do Wedge peak with one of the guys (Todd) I had done my mountaineering course with but after talking about it a bunch it was too much and I wasn't prepared so I decided to stick to my original plan which was Mt. Amadis!
Originally I wanted to start hiking at 7 but I of course slept in and didn't even get out of bed till 8. I woke up and drove straight to the trailhead and started hiking just before 9. The first 2km are a well groomed horse trail and then the trail splits to lead up to the ridge. After the split its a narrow trail with quite a bit of foliage overhanging on to the trail, you can tell it doesn't get a lot of use. It was a bit annoying because there was a fair amount of stinging nettle and even though I had pants on it still stung me a bunch.
Anyways I made quick time of that section and found myself at the turn off to the International Ridge trail. It had been ~4km and under an hour so I was feeling good. I texted Sam quickly to tell her my progress and foolishly mentioned I was "just under" halfway up... not even close. I headed up.
The next 2km were the biggest slog, gaining hundreds of metres (total gain was nearly 1800m) and very tiring. I slogged up, not much to say. Not really any views and the weather wasn't amazing. There were one or two spots with ropes to assist but not really needed. After that I was on the ridge and it was an easy and actually somewhat pleasant flat ridge walk for 3-4km to the summit. I actually liked this part even though it felt like the effort to get there wasn't worth it.
At the end of the ridge I had to ascend ~100m to get to the true summit off trail and at this point I was pretty tired so it was quite difficult but I perservered and made it. It was probably around 1230 and had taken me just under 4 hours to get to the top. The summit itself had no views but just to the south there was a small alpine clearing with limited views. I had a quick lunch and descended. I had to be back to pick up Coen from the gym.
The descent was uneventful but thankfully quicker. I made it back to my truck around 3:45 and headed home. Overall I wouldn't reccomend this hike and I definitely wouldn't do it again. There is a trail to the south that is more direct that I may try in the future to bag another peak (Mt. Isar) but I am in no rush. It was a very good workout however.
